Utah State University - As Utah's land-grant university, USU conducts world-class research into many agricultural and natural resource disciplines. Utah State's Extension community provides cutting edge resources and support for the state, including an excellent Continuing Education program. Under the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education USU is classified as a Doctoral/Research University-Extensive, awarding at least 50 doctoral degrees per year across at least 15 disciplines. It spends around $186 million for research annually.
USU is well known for its engineering program and Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL). The SDL is a world-famous research facility focusing on military and science applications. It frequently submits projects to the Department of Defense and NASA.
Logan boasts a handsome downtown area and pretty tree lined residential neighborhoods. Its architectural focal point is the gleaming Logan Temple set on a hill near the center of town.
The mountains surrounding Logan provide good opportunities for hiking, biking, fishing and camping, and in winter downhill and cross-country skiing. Logan has plenty of motels and restaurants and all the other shops and services you'd expect in a moderate-sized city.
Bear Lake is a large, natural lake with a striking turquoise color. (Limestone particles suspended in the water are responsible for the interesting hue.) It is surrounded by low, lightly timbered mountains to the east and west, marshland to the north and flatlands with stands of cottonwoods to the south. Bear Lake's size, 20 miles long by 8 miles wide, makes it inviting to boaters, skiers and sailers. It also offers decent fishing for cutthroats, rainbows, mackinaw, and whitefish. A large marina and numerous rentals and outfitters offer everything you need to enjoy the lake.
Fishing is popular and good on the lake. Anglers go for cutthroats (the only true native), rainbows, mackinaw, whitefish and yellow perch. In late January, hundreds of fishermen cut holes in the ice along the eastern shore and use nets to catch the small Bonneville Cisco that run the shores to spawn. Ice fishing along the western shore is very popular.
